Welcome to our Magnet

Los Angeles High School's Magnet program is based upon a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) theme. It is an interdisciplinary, standards-based, inquiry-based, and real-world problem-based programs that teach students about STEAM-related subjects. These programs are geared to the student’s interest in science, computer technology, and mathematics.

Our Vision is the belief that careers in math and science are an essential component of the 21st century, and are central to modern education. To this end, the magnet is focused on a rigorous academic program based on math and science classes. The program prepares all students for higher-level education and/or careers in math and science.

The Mission of our STEAM program is designed to work towards ameliorating the five harms of racial isolation, identified by the court, which are: low academic achievement, low self-esteem, lack of access to post-secondary opportunities, interracial hostility and intolerance, and overcrowded conditions. The magnet program at Los Angeles High School is committed to ameliorate these identified concerns through implementation of individual attention to students, vertical and horizontal course alignment, a focus on math and science class offerings, academic rigor, teacher collaboration, extracurricular/co-curricular activities, and community/parental support.

Our Pathway's primary goal is to prepare high school students (grades 9-12) for higher education and/or careers in math and science. To achieve this, the magnet program offers a full range of regular, Honors and AP academic courses in a rich learning environment. The faculty and staff of the magnet share a commitment to rigorous classroom instruction combined with academic support and intervention programs to help all students succeed. The cohesiveness of the magnet as an institution with a staff and student body dedicated to this vision of excellence in academics enhances its success.
Historically, our STEAM Magnet, which was founded in 1981, was the first of its kind. It has grown substantially over the years. In 1994 the magnet expanded to include ninth grade. The total student capacity is currently 316 with 11 teachers.
